The Hugh T. Reed papers, 1879-1913.

Includes scrapbooks of newspaper clippings on western military operations and personal topics (1879-1890); chronological history of the Sioux Indian nation (n.d.); biographical sketch for Reed (1900), various official papers and passes (1890's); correspondence with West Point regarding donation of Indian artifacts (1910-1913), and a catalog of American Indian war photographs found at the Historical Section, Army War College. Two manuscripts written by Reed in the early 1900's entitled: INDIAN CAMPAIGNING : BEING A DIARY OF A SERIES OF EXPEDITIONS AGAINST THE SIOUX INDIANS ESCORTING NEZ PERCES INDIAN PRISONERS et cetera, and, ARMY TIDBITS : BEING A NARRATIVE OF LIFE AMONG THE SIOUX AND APACHE INDIANS, VISITS TO HOME FOLKS AND CUBANS, SERVICE ON SIGNAL AND COLLEGE DUTY.

Graduated from West Point in 1873 as 2nd Lieutenant, 1st Infantry. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant in 1878. Served at Fort Gratiot, Mich. (1873-74) and then various posts in the Dakota Territory (1874-78). Participated in the Nez PerceĢ Indian wars (1877). Became professor of military science at Southern Illinois Normal University (1883) and was later sent to the Arizona Territory (1883-84).
